Children’s book printing

Bring illustrated stories to the page with colorful printing and a format that suits the story. From picture books to learning activities, PRNT keeps your artwork, cover and printing choices together.

Children’s books

A thoughtful home for a big imagination

Children’s picture books use the relationship between words and images to guide readers through a story. Square formats can give illustrations a generous canvas, while portrait formats may suit longer stories and educational titles. Plan each page turn as part of the narrative.

Full-color printing is a natural starting point for illustrated stories. Paperback and hardcover options give different presentations; the supported choices depend on size, paper and page count. Gloss and matte surfaces change the feel and appearance of illustrated pages.

Activity and coloring books have different needs from picture books. Pages meant for writing or coloring may benefit from uncoated stock and a layout with plenty of usable space. Board-book production can be requested through wholesale, with construction and suitability confirmed by our team; it is not the same as a standard hardcover.

What you can make with each printing path

Print on demand and wholesale differ in more than quantity and price. Print on demand is digital production from our supported product list; wholesale is offset production with a wider choice of materials and finishes, quoted by our team. Here is what each path offers for this kind of book.

Print on demand

What you can do with print on demand

Digital production from our supported product list. Prices are calculated for your exact specifications and shipping address, and orders can start from a single copy.

Formats

  • A square 8.5 × 8.5 in picture-book trim, plus portrait and other supported sizes for longer stories and learning titles.
  • Casewrap or linen hardcover, and perfect-bound paperback.

Ink & paper

  • Premium full color for illustrated pages, with standard color available where illustrations appear only now and then.
  • Coated stock for vivid picture books, or uncoated stock when the book is meant for writing and colouring.

Cover treatment

  • Glossy or matte cover finish, with a spine sized to your final page count.
  • Foil-stamped spine text on supported linen hardcover editions.

Quantity

  • A single copy to read aloud with a child before you decide on a larger print run.

Wholesale

What you can do with wholesale

Offset production with a wider material palette. Your specifications and quantities are quoted by our team, and runs start at 200 copies per requested quantity.

Cover materials

  • Cloth or leather covers on hardcover and softcover editions, as well as printed paper-over-board and printed wraps.
  • Custom trim sizes and shaped formats, so a picture book is not limited to the standard product sizes.

Finish & decoration

  • Foil stamping and embossed detail on the case, with gilded edges for keepsake and award editions.
  • Ribbon markers, dust jackets, coloured endpapers and head and tail bands on hardcover books.

Presentation

  • A slipcase or book box for a boxed story set, and matching materials across a whole series.
  • Board book construction on its own quoted specifications for the youngest readers, with rounded corners as a requested option.

Construction

  • Smyth-sewn signatures for a book that survives being read every night, or lay-flat binding so a double-page spread opens fully.

Binding types for wholesale projects

The binding decides how a book opens, how long it lasts and what it costs to make. For wholesale runs our team quotes the construction that suits your page count and how the book will be used.

Smyth-sewn (section-sewn)

Folded paper signatures sewn together along the spine of an open book

Folded signatures are sewn together along the spine before being glued into the cover. It is the strongest bookblock we can make, opens comfortably and holds up to repeated reading — the standard construction for hardcovers and for paperbacks that need to survive handling.

Case binding (hardcover)

Cloth-bound hardcover book standing upright with a squared spine

Rigid grey board is covered in cloth, leather or printed paper to form a separate case, and the sewn or glued bookblock is attached with endpapers. This is what gives a hardcover its squared spine, its heft and its upright shelf presence.

Perfect binding (softcover)

Stack of perfect-bound paperbacks with clean glued spines

The spine edge of the stacked pages is milled and bonded to a flexible cover with hot-melt or PUR adhesive, then trimmed flush on three sides. It is the most economical way to bind a paperback and suits most text-led books.

Saddle stitching

Short booklet opened flat showing staples in the centre fold

Folded sheets are nested and stapled through the centre fold. Ideal for shorter comic issues, magazines, catalogues and program booklets, where a low per-copy cost matters more than a square spine.

Wire-O and spiral binding

Notebook with a metal wire-O spine lying open flat

Pages and cover are punched and threaded onto a metal or plastic spine, so the book turns through itself and lies flat. A practical choice for journals, workbooks, manuals and anything that has to stay open on a desk.

Lay-flat (Otabind) binding

Art book opened completely flat on a table with a blank spread

The textblock and the cover move independently of one another, so a spread can open completely flat without straining the spine. Photograph books, art catalogues and cookbooks are the usual candidates.

Board book construction

Thick board book for young readers with rounded corners and chunky pages

Thick printed boards, laminated and shaped for young readers, with rounded corners as a requested option. This is a separate production method from a standard hardcover and is quoted on its own specifications.

Before you send it to print

Keep text and faces away from trim edges and the gutter. Extend edge-to-edge illustrations into the required bleed, review page turns, and make sure you have permission to reproduce every illustration.

Review spelling, content, permissions and page order. Technical file review does not replace proofreading, and print suitability must be confirmed for your chosen specifications.

Choose your printing path

Digital print on demand starts from a single copy, with printing and shipping prices requested for your specifications and address. Wholesale offset runs start at 200 copies per requested quantity, with a quote and delivery estimate from our team.
